About chain link fence installation

Galvanized or vinyl-coated. Residential perimeter, commercial, and pet runs.

The utility material. Lowest cost per linear foot, fast to install, and stronger than people give it credit for. Works best as a back run, pet enclosure, or commercial perimeter where appearance isn't the priority. Galvanized for the most budget-conscious work, vinyl-coated for a cleaner visual read.

Where chain link makes sense

Chain link is the utility material. Lower cost per linear foot than any other fence we install, faster to put up, and harder to break than people give it credit for. The trade-off is curb appeal. Chain link reads as functional, not decorative, and that limits where it makes sense.

The use cases where chain link wins:

  • Backyard pet run. containing a dog without buying a $15K wood privacy fence.
  • Property perimeter on a wooded or rural lot. where appearance isn't the priority and total cost matters.
  • Security perimeter. industrial sites, construction yards, storage facilities, equipment yards.
  • Garden or pool plot enclosure. cheap visibility-friendly enclosure for areas you don't need to hide.

Where chain link falls short

A few situations where chain link is not the right pick:

  • The fence is going somewhere visible and resale matters. Chain link is the one fence material where neighbors and appraisers consistently knock the curb-appeal score.
  • Your HOA prohibits it. Some Union County developments do.
  • You want privacy. Chain link is see-through by default. Privacy slats help but aren't a real substitute for a privacy fence.

Chain link materials

Galvanized. The classic silver chain link. Zinc-coated steel mesh that holds up to NJ weather for 15 to 20+ years. Best value per foot. Most common for back perimeters, dog runs, and commercial applications where appearance is secondary.

Vinyl-coated. Same galvanized core with a black, green, or brown PVC coating bonded on. Reads less industrial than bare galvanized and blends better with hedges and tree lines. Costs more per foot but only marginally. The coating also extends life by another 5 to 10 years and keeps rust from showing as the mesh ages.

Heavy-gauge / commercial. Thicker wire and stronger framework for industrial perimeter, construction yards, and high-traffic applications. Different gauge and post spec from residential. Often paired with privacy slats or barbed wire toppers.

Heights, slats, and toppers

Standard heights for residential chain link are 4, 5, and 6 feet. Commercial and industrial runs go higher (8 to 10 feet) and often add barbed wire or razor ribbon toppers, which are commercial-only and require specific permits.

Privacy slats slide vertically into the mesh and give partial visual screening. Useful where you need a hint of privacy without paying for a real privacy fence.

Union County permit notes

Most Union County towns treat chain link the same as other fence materials for permit purposes. Over 4 feet usually requires a permit. Front yards cap at 4 feet. Commercial perimeter fencing has its own permit track with different requirements.
